1. Identify the type of leak:

  • Dripping tap: Water drips continuously from the faucet spout, even when the handle is turned off.
  • Leaking tap base: Water seeps out from the area where the faucet meets the sink or counter.
  • Cartridge leak: Water leaks from the handle area of a single-handle faucet.
  • Aerator leak: Water leaks from the small screen at the end of the faucet spout.

2. Turn off the water supply:

  • Locate the main shut-off valve for your house and turn it off.

3. Remove the faucet handle:

  • For a single-handle faucet, use an Allen wrench to remove the screw holding the handle in place.
  • For a two-handle faucet, remove the decorative caps and use an adjustable wrench to loosen the handle nuts.

4. Inspect the cartridge:

  • If you have a single-handle faucet, remove the cartridge and inspect it for wear or damage.
  • If the cartridge is damaged, replace it with a new one.

5. Tighten or replace the washer:

  • If the cartridge is not damaged, remove the washer and inspect it for wear or cracks.
  • If the washer is worn, replace it with a new one.
  • If the washer is in good condition, tighten it back in place.

6. Reassemble the faucet:

  • Reassemble the faucet in the reverse order of disassembly.
  • Tighten all connections securely.

7. Turn on the water supply:

  • Slowly turn the main shut-off valve back on and check for leaks.

8. Test the faucet:

  • Turn the faucet on and off several times to ensure it is working properly and there are no leaks.
